Mystery surrounds Miss Puerto Rico
By now, everyone’s heard the story of the latest Miss Puerto Rico, Ingrid Marie Rivera, crowned on Saturday after overcoming a bomb scare, theft and an unfortunate encounter with pepper spray.
Well, the 24-year-old beauty queen is back in the headlines today, but the news isn’t focused on her heroism like it was before.
An article posted to People.com earlier today suggests police are investigating whether the clothes and make-up of Rivera, who is scheduled to be interviewed on Wednesday's Today show, were, in fact, spiked with pepper spray.
Early news reports about the Miss Puerto Rico competition suggested one of Rivera’s competitors spiked her clothes and make-up with pepper spray, prompting her to ice her face and body to prevent swelling between events.
She also had to deal with the theft of some of her bags, which contained clothing and credit cards, and a bomb threat that forced the cancellation of some preliminary events.
"It was a lot of sacrifice, and my tears were genuine," Rivera told reporters over the weekend. "At one point, I asked, 'Am I a masochist?' But I said regardless of the results, this is my goal. The more rocks there are in my path, the more thanks I will give to God for sustaining me."
Pageant and police officials vowed to get to the bottom of the attempted sabotage, with Magali Febles, director of the Miss Puerto Rico Universe Pageant, telling Reuters, "I am going to investigate this until the final consequences. When we have everything, I will announce who the person is because someone with these instincts is capable of anything."
