Stonewall chief executive Ben Summerskill had a unique take on the Royal scandal at the Stonewall Awards last night:
"It's an age old truth that some things never change and I was reminded of that by all this week's newspapers, with stories about a member of the Royal Family having gay sex and taking cocaine. The Daily Mail described this as unprecedented," he said.
"Those of us with long memories recall that it was just 70 years ago that it was widely reported that the late Duke of Kent, in a dressing room at the Wyndham theatre, had taken both cocaine and Sir Noel Coward!
"In the days I was a journalist it was explained to me by a member of the Royal Household that the only reason for this regrettable lapse was that the late Duke had been very much in love with society beauty Baba Curzon, but sadly she had run off with the great war hero Group Captain Fruity Metcalfe.
"Sadly of course, most of us cannot explain our sexual orientations in such an uncomplicated way."
