A Mexican donkey spent three days in the big house for acting like an ass when he became enraged and kicked and bit two men.
Authorities arrested Blackie, a burro from Chiapas State in southern Mexico, on assault and battery charges and tossed him in a local jail normally reserved for people jailed for public drunkenness and other disturbances, police said.
The donkey was remanded to remain behind bars until its owner agreed to pay the medical bills for the men Blackie attacked, said Officer Sinar Gomez.
"Around here, if someone commits a crime they are jailed," Gomez said—"no matter who they are."
The owner, Mauro Gutierrez, reached a deal with the victims and arranged to pay their medical bills, estimated at $420, according to the Associated Press.
During his outburst on Sunday, Blackie bit Genaro Vazquez, 63, in the chest and then kicked 52-year-old Andres Hernandez, breaking the man’s ankle as Hernandez attempted to rescue his friend.
"All of a sudden, the animal was on top of us like it was rabid," Hernandez said.
It took six men to subdue Blackie, police said.
Blackie’s incarceration isn’t the first time Chiapas police have thrown animals in the slammer.
A bull that devoured corn crops and destroyed two wooden vending stands did time in March. And in 2006, a dog was locked up for 12 days after biting someone.
Since Gutierrez reached an agreement with the victims, Blackie has been released from prison and is back at home grazing.
