However, this weekend, he celebrated his 62nd birthday with a relatively low-key trip to Hamburger Hamlet on Sunset Boulevard.
Perhaps this choice of venue was due to a certain sympathy for those feeling the pinch in the recession. Or, more likely, Elton's feeling the strain on his purse-strings after losing a libel case against the Guardian earlier this week.
Marina Hyde, writing in the broadsheet's Weekend supplement magazine, was accused of mocking Elton John's AIDS fundraisers. In an amusing article, Hyde suggested that Elton's parties, namely the opulent White Tie and Tiara Ball, held by the Elton John AIDS Foundation and raising £10 million last year, were regarded by Elton simply as an opportunity to make new famous friends.
With David Furnish's absence unaccounted for, Elton saw in his 63rd year with many guests, including Sharon, Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne, Cindy Crawford, Lady Victoria Hervey and former Pop Idol contestant Darius Danesh.

His partner was there.
