After drawing serious fire from Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin and other ultra conservatives, Dunkin’ Donuts has pulled a new ad featuring America’s domestic sweetheart, Rachael Ray, wearing a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men.
Though the company initially tried to brush off complaints about the scarf in question, Malkin’s commentary on the subject in her syndicated column yesterday was incendiary.
In the column, an outraged Malkin wrote: "Popularised by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."
Combined with the growing right wing rage on the web over Ray’s fashion statement, Dunkin Donuts was convinced to change course with respect to the ad.
In a statement, Dunkin' executives explained: "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."
In response to the announcement, Michelle Malkin said:
"It's refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists."
So much for Rachael Ray making fashion statements.
Score another for the right.
